Gaming app installs in Japan rose 3% year over year in H1 2026, & sessions rose 5%. Growth was strongest in card games.

2. Puzzle games dominate Japan’s in-game ad exposure
Puzzle & tabletop titles make up nine of Japan’s top 10 mobile games by ad impressions. Their accessible gameplay, repeatable sessions, & broad audiences suit ad-supported & hybrid monetization models.
Ad intensity varies sharply between titles, so high impression volume can come from either a large audience or frequent exposure.

Geniee’s Take
Sharings and insights from Geniee’s App Monetization experts
Leveraging Geniee oRTB to scale gaming apps’ revenue potential
Geniee now offers OpenRTB server-to-server integration for app and game publishers. Eligible inventory connects directly to Geniee Exchange for real-time bidding.
Why it matters for Japan inventory
Digital ad spend and impressions in Japan continue to grow, & gaming remains one of the country’s largest advertising categories.
Geniee checks the supply chain (schain) hop count and prioritizes direct or shorter paths for app inventory. Shorter paths give buyers clearer visibility into where inventory comes from and make it more efficient for them to reach publishers.
Supported formats
Initial supported formats are banner and image interstitial, with additional formats subject to product availability.
Key Takeaway
More impressions do not always mean better monetization. OpenRTB gives publishers another way to offer qualified inventory to real-time demand while keeping the supply path transparent.

The Geniee team will be attending ad:tech Tokyo 2026. This is one of Asia’s most prominent gatherings for digital advertising and marketing professionals.
This year’s event theme, Marketing in Action: From Experimentation to Impact, reflects a shift that is already well underway across the industry. AI and data have moved past the experimental stage. The focus now is on execution, which covers translating technology adoption into measurable business outcomes across customer experience, brand, and commerce.
It is a conversation that resonates closely with the work Geniee does alongside publishers and partners across the region, and we are looking forward to being part of it.
If you will be at ad:tech Tokyo this year, we would love to connect. Reach out to our team at gi-marketing@geniee.co.jp to set up a meeting.
